The first week of the college baseball season is in the books and we are one step closer to the MLB Draft. 

Literally. When MLB players stepped into spring training facilities in Arizona and Florida last week, baseball got closer to the All-Star Break and the impending MLB Draft. That is a little less than five months away from the draft.

To recap: The Cleveland Guardians have the No. 1 pick. The Cincinnati Reds No. 2 and the Colorado Rockies are at No. 3. 

The scouts are consistent with who the top three players: West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt, Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz and Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana. 

Each week we’ll break down the performances from the top 10 prospects in our composite rankings.

MLB Draft 2024 Prospect Of The Week: Travis Bazzana, Oregon State Baseball

Perfect Game named Bazzana the co-player of the week. And it’s very clear why. Oregon State played at the Sanderson Ford Baseball Classic and faced Minnesota twice along with New Mexico and CSU Bakersfield. While neither of those teams were close to the top-25, Bazzana's numbers were eye-popping. 

He hit .563 with three home runs, a double and a triple while slugging 1.313. He also stole three bases. 

Bazzana showcased everything that scouts love about him. Clearly his speed and his power were on display. Bazzana, a lefty, started every game at second base and had 12 assist and an 1.000 fielding percentage. He combined for two double plays. 

If Bazzana continues to hit like he did last week, he will make it very hard for the Guardians and Reds to pass him up at the top of the draft. His defense and showing whether or not he could move off second base may not matter to those teams if wins the Golden Spikes Award. 

Wake Forest Baseball’s Chase Burns And The Ridiculous Prospect Note Of The Week

Chase Burns was one of the top transfers in college baseball this offseason and he may have been the piece that cemented Wake Forest as the No.1 team in the country. 

And he may be the best pitching prospect in the draft. Burns’ fastball touched triple digits this weekend and his plus slider appears Major League Baseball ready.

That overlays shows just why Burns could excel in the majors with no difference between the fastball and slider delivery. Deception! His slider had been clocked in the upper 80s, but with an elevated velocity of 92, he could start climbing up the prospect rankings. 

The talent showed in the results. Burns pitched six inning and allowed three hits and walked one while striking out 10 against Illinois. 

Burns started the season as Baseball America’s No. 7 prospect. He was pushed down to No. 15 after their latest updated included an influx of high school prospects and he landed just after Josh Hartle, his Wake Forest teammate. 

Hartle was pretty good too for Wake. He had a 1.59 ERA in 5.2 innings . He gave up one earned run on two hits and a walk and struck out four. 

MLB Draft 2024 Top 10 Stats

Here are the stats from Week 1 from our Top 10 prospects: 

1. JJ Wetherholt, West Virginia Baseball

• Statline: .308/.385/.438; 2 SB

Note: Wetherholt's team went 2-2 in a four-game series with Stetson in Florida. The unanimous top prospect in the draft didn't drive in any runs but did manage four hits in 13 at-bats. One of the reasons he's at the top of the draft boards is his speed. He stole three bases and had a double. Wetherholt batted leadoff. 

2. Nick Kurtz, Wake Forest Baseball

• Statline: 235/.412/.278; 1 HR, 3 RBI

Note: Kurtz didn't have an eye-pooping first week stat-wise. But he still hit a home run, walked and stuckout less than Bazzana did. The 6-foot-5 junior began the season as the No.1 prospect in the class at Baseball America and No. 2 at MLB Pipeline. He dropped to No. 2 at Baseball American in mid-February. 

3. Travis Bazzana, Oregon State Baseball

• Statline: .563/1.313/.650; 3 HR, 9 Hits, 2 SB

Note: His team went 4-0 and Bazzana earned Player of the Week honors from Perfect Game. 

4. Jac Caglianone, Florida Baseball

• Statline: .571/1.143/.700; 1 HR, 1 2B, 4 RBI

Note: Caglianone didn't pitch in the three games Florida played in Week 1.Maybe he would have, but the middle game of the three-game series was canceled against St. John's. The Gators were upset on Opening Day by St. John's, and Caglianone didn't play in the final game against the Red Storm.But he did go 2-for-4 on Opening Day and then went 2-for-3 with a double and home run against North Florida on Feb. 20. 

5. Charlie Condon. Georgia Baseball

• Statline: .714/1.357/.800; 2 HR, 4 RBI, 5 BB

Condon might have had an even more impressive weekend than Bazzana as the Bulldogs played UNC Asheville and Georgia State to open the season. 

6. Vance Honeycutt, North Carolina Baseball

• Statline: .250/.813/.429, 3 HR, 8 RBI

7. Tommy White, LSU Baseball

• Statline:  .400/.467/.500

9. Seaver King, Wake Forest Baseball

• Statline: .214/.429/.333; 2 SB, 1 HR, 3 RBI

Note: No. 8 prospect Konnor Griffin is a prep prospect at Jackson Prep in Mississippi. 

10. Braden Montgomery, Texas A&M Baseball

• Statline: .313/.750/.421; 2 HR; 5 Hits; 6 RBI; 1 SB

When Is The 2024 MLB Draft?

The actual time and date of the MLB Draft hasn't been announced, but it will take place during 2024 MLB All-Star Week. MLB All-Star festivities kick off on Sunday, July 14, with the main event taking place on Tuesday, July 16.

In 2023, the draft began All-Star week on the Sunday before Tuesday's game between the National League and American League. 

The draft began at 2 p.m. EST in 2023.
