Towson and the University of New Hampshire will square off in Week 5 for a chance to climb up from the lowest rungs of the Coastal Athletic Association standings, as both teams are 0-1 early in the conference slate.

Towson (1-3) opened the 2023 season with losses to Maryland and Monmouth (CAA), before hitting the win column on the road at Morgan State. Unfortunately, Towson’s Family Weekend was ruined by Norfolk State, a 21-14 winner over the Tigers last Saturday.

There’s nothing but CAA competition ahead for Towson, including its Week 5 battle with New Hampshire, which shared the CAA crown with William & Mary in 2022.

The co-champions topped the conference standings at 7-1, so Towson and New Hampshire both would have to win out to match those results. But would that be enough in 2023? Three teams are tied at 2-0 so far (William & Mary, Delaware and Elon), but William & Mary and Elon are playing each other this week. Delaware has the week off.

New Hampshire is 2-2 this season, earning wins over Stonehill and Dartmouth in Week 1 and Week 3, respectively, while falling to Central Michigan and Delaware in Week 2 and Week 4.

The Wildcats failed to score in the final quarter last week against Delaware, despite the UNH defense keeping the Blue Hens scoreless, too. The final score was 29-25.

Towson and New Hampshire have met 14 times, with New Hampshire owning an 11-3 advantage in the series.

They played for the first time in 1980, and New Hampshire won the first seven meetings, before Towson won three of its own.

UNH is back to its winning ways, topping the Tigers another four consecutive times, including a 37-14 effort in 2022.

This weekend will mark Family Weekend and Cheer & Spirit Day at New Hampshire, so maybe Towson can get a little redemption for it’s own celebration being ruined last week.
