Thomas Gilman Is Competing At Final X Wrestling 2023: What You Should Know
Thomas Gilman qualified for Final X Wrestling 2023 as the silver medalist at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships. Here’s what to know about him.
Though Thomas Gilman fell to Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakarov in the final at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Gilman’s silver-medal performance also earned him a spot at Final X Wrestling 2023.
Gilman, a world champion in 2021 and Olympic bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, is the top-ranked wrestler in the domestic freestyle wrestling rankings on FloWrestling.
His Final X 2023 opponent will be Zane Richards, who was the 57kg champion at the 2023 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in April.

Gable Steveson Could Join The Most Exclusive Club In Wrestling
This year’s edition of Final X will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on June 10. The event will feature the top-two wrestlers at every weight class in a best-of-three series, with the winners making the 2023 United States World Team.
The world team will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, to compete at the 2023 Senior World Championships from Sept. 16-24.

Thomas Gilman Has Found International Wrestling Success
Gilman was the winner at 57 kilograms at the 2021 UWW World Championship in Oslo, Norway. It was his first gold medal in international competition and came shortly after a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
His previous-best at the World Championships was a silver medal in 2017, which he matched in 2022. He also struck gold at the 2022 Pan American Wrestling Championships.
Thomas Gilman Was A Star For Iowa Wrestling
A standout at the University of Iowa with more than 100 career wins, Gilman was a three-time All-American, 2016 NCAA runner-up and 2017 Big Ten Conference champion.
After his successful reign in college, Gilman wrestled for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club then moved east to train with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in State College, Pennsylvania.
Thomas Gilman Is A Nebraska Wrestling Legend
Gilman attended Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was a four-time individual state champion in four weight classes (103, 112, 119 and 132 pounds). He also helped Skutt Catholic to three team titles (2009, 2010, 2012) and runner-up finish in 2011.

How Wrestlers Qualify For Final X Wrestling 2023
A wrestler can qualify for Final X in one of three ways.
First, all 2022 senior world medalists automatically qualified for Final X. There were seven wrestlers in men’s freestyle, six in women’s freestyle and zero in Greco-Roman who met this criterion.
Next, all champions from the 2023 US Open (held April 26-30) automatically qualified for Final X.
Finally, for the weights that didn’t have a returning world medalist, the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament (May 20-21) champion will earn a spot in Final X.
