North Central coach Joe Norton was feeling pretty good following the first day of the 2023 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships. His team sent 10 to the semifinals with all 15 wrestlers earning All-American honors for placing in the top eight. 

Still, his team is only 10 points over King in the team race.

The Tornado also sent 10 to the semifinals but only placed 14 and will not score points at 191 pounds when Nia Crosdale was knocked out of the tournament during the final bout of the day. 

"We needed that match," King coach Jason Moorman said. "We needed those All-American points for the team score. I didn't feel like we had a really good first round. Half wrestled well and half were flat. We have 10 in the semis and we have some big matchups against North Central."

Moorman wasn't kidding, either. King and North Central face off in four semifinal matches and the Tornado is favored in three. That could ultimately decide the team title if it comes down to the wire during tomorrow's final.

"Our team did very well," North Central coach Joe Norton said. "I wish we could have put one or both in the semis at 155 and we were close. They punched their All-American ticket on the backside but it's all about winning those semifinal matches."

McKendree is in third after winning the first three National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (2020-22). The Bearcats are 30.5 points behind North Central but still have a realistic shot at winning five individual titles after sending five to the semifinals.
